Dream Gerrard alternative: 49ers could hire "kamikaze" manager for Rangers

da fezbet: Glasgow Rangers should be in the market to find a manager who can bring success and trophies back to Ibrox ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

da pinnacle: The board decided to part ways with Philippe Clement earlier this year, and they brought in Barry Ferguson to Rangers as the interim head coach until the end of the season.

Whilst the former Scotland international has not completely disgraced himself in the job, the Ibrox outfit’s form since Ferguson took the reins does not suggest that he is a serious contender for the full-time gig.

Rangers have won four, drawn four, and lost four of his 12 matches in charge, and are currently on a run of six matches without a win after their 1-1 draw with Celtic.

This does not suggest that Ferguson is the man to turn Rangers into a winning machine that can wrestle back the Scottish Premiership title from Celtic next season.

Another manager who is not likely to be in the dugout at Ibrox next season is former Gers title-winner Steven Gerrard, as he has been ruled out in a new report.

The latest on Steven Gerrard to Rangers

According to TEAMtalk, the Liverpool legend will not be the next Rangers manager to come in and take over from Ferguson at the end of this season.

The report claims that the 49ers, who are set to make their first appointment once a takeover is finalised, want a new head coach who has no prior connections to Ibrox.

It states that the prospective owners want to gradually build a winning team in Glasgow and they want to start by appointing a fresh face, with no pre-existing relationships at Rangers, who has a philosophy and a style of play that can be built around for years to come.

Gerrard, of course, does not fit what they want because he has already managed the Light Blues successfully in his first spell at Ibrox before his move to Aston Villa in 2021.

As you can see in the table above, the English boss only lost one of his last 50 league matches in charge of the club, going unbeaten in the 2020/21 campaign.

The 49ers, however, have decided that they do not want to retread that path, which means that Gerrard will not be returning to Scottish football this summer, at least not with Rangers.

Former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard.

It is now down to the club to find an alternative manager who can be as successful as the English tactician was during his time at Ibrox, and they could do that by hiring Bodo/Glimt head coach Kjetil Knutsen.

TEAMtalk’s report adds that the Gers have been linked with the Norwegian boss in the past and that he should be the kind of manager that they target this summer.

Bodo/Glimt boss Kjetil Knutsen.

The outlet also reveals that this year could be the year that Knutsen finally moves on from Bodo/Glimt, having been linked with other clubs for several years, going back as far as 2021 when he was linked to Premier League side Norwich City.

Rangers must, now, tempt the 56-year-old head coach to come to Ibrox ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, because he could be a dream alternative to Gerrard for the 49ers.

Why Knutsen is a dream alternative to Gerrard for Rangers

The former Liverpool midfielder and Rangers manager was an appealing option to the Light Blues because he has been there and done it; he has won the Premiership.

Knutsen, however, is a head coach who knows how to win league titles, having won even more than Gerrard, and has had success in Europe for Bodo/Glimt, as shown by the impressive fact below.

The Norwegian boss’ side are currently 3-1 down on aggregate against Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-finals of the Europa League, and still have a chance to make the final in their second leg clash on Thursday night.

This suggests that he has the tactical nous and playing style to be effective in Europe, whilst also having already proven his ability to set up a team to win league titles consistently.

As you can see in the table above, Bodo/Glimt have won the Eliteserien in four of the last five seasons, and are currently top of the table after four matches in the 2025 campaign, averaging at least two points per match in all of those years.

This shows that Knutsen can build a team that can consistently challenge for titles and dominate a league, which is the ambition that Rangers should have, after watching their rivals lift the Premiership title in each of the last four seasons.

Bodo/Glimt head coach Kjetil Knutsen.

As well as being a great candidate because of his team’s trophies and progression in Europe, he could also be a great alternative to Gerrard because of his style of play. Bodo/Glimt captain Ulrik Saltnes described Knutsen’s playing style as “kamikaze” and Transfermarkt notes that he plays an attacking 4-3-3 formation.

Bodo/Glimt scored 71 goals and 78 goals in 30 league matches in the 2024 and 2023 campaigns, which shows how exciting that ‘kamikaze’ style can be as his team can score plenty of goals on their way to winning trophies.

Therefore, Knutsen could be the dream alternative to Gerrard for the 49ers because he has the style of play, the trophies, and the European success to suggest that he could be an excellent appointment. It is now down to the club to convince the Bodo/Glimt boss that a move to Rangers is the best next step in his coaching career.

Better than Iraola: Spurs could hire "incredible" Europa League winner

da premier bet: It would be impossible to describe Tottenham Hotspur’s season as anything other than a failure this year.

da spicy bet: Now, it’s true that Ange Postecoglou still has the chance to achieve something remarkable in the Europa League, but should that not happen, he’ll have overseen the club’s worst campaign in a generation – or two.

For example, in the Premier League alone, the North Londoners have lost 19 games, so reports suggesting he’ll get the sack regardless of what happens on the continent are hardly surprising.

One of the names most heavily touted for replacing the Australian in recent weeks and months has been Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola, but another name has now been thrown into the ring: a manager who’d be a far better choice.

Tottenham's manager search

Before getting to the man in question, it’s worth looking at some of the other coaches who have been linked with the role, such as Marco Silva.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

It’s easy to see why the club might be interested in the Fulham boss, as since taking charge of the West Londoners in 2021, when they were in the Championship, he’s transformed them into a comfortably mid-table Premier League side.

A far more ambitious manager linked with the North Londoners has been Xabi Alonso.

Bayer Leverkusen coachXabiAlonso

The former Liverpool star led Bayer Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title ever last season, and if that wasn’t impressive enough, he did it undefeated and won the DFB Pokal to boot.

However, it would appear as if Real Madrid might be keen to hire the Spaniard, making a move to Spurs feel incredibly unlikely, which isn’t the case with Oliver Glasner.

According to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, the Crystal Palace manager is one of the names on the list of potential successors to Postecoglou.

While it certainly wouldn’t be easy to get the Austrian coach out of Selhurst Park, it wouldn’t be impossible, and with how well he’d done in South London, he’d be worth the effort and a better option than Iraola.

How Glasner compares to Iraola

So, if it gets to a point at which Daniel Levy and Co need to make a decision between Glasner and Iraola in the coming weeks, why should they pick the former?

First, he’s already proven that he can win big prizes with teams who aren’t always expected to, as he led Eintracht Frankfurt to Europa League glory in 2022, which was only their second major trophy since the 1987/88 season.

Moreover, he’s just got Crystal Palace into only their third FA Cup final and has completely transformed a number of their players, most notably Jean-Philippe Mateta.

For example, in the 22/23 campaign, the Frenchman scored just four goals in 33 games, but last season, that jumped up to 19 goals and six assists in 39 games, and this season, he’s already hit 17 goals and four assists in 41.

Finally, and this is important, despite taking over the Eagles when they were in relegation form, he has a better record with them than the Cherries boss has with his side.

In contrast, the Spaniard has won 33 games, drawn 20, lost 30 and averaged 1.43 points per game on the south coast.

Ultimately, while both managers would probably be an improvement on Postecoglou, Glasner has the pedigree of winning major honours and has arguably overseen an even more impressive transformation of a struggling Premier League side than Iraola.

Man City send scouts to view £85m "superstar in the making" who Pep loves

da roleta: Manchester City are believed to be “very interested” in completing the signing of a player who has been described as a “superstar in the making” this summer, sending scouts to watch him in action.

Man City preparing for big Nottingham Forest clash

da betway: Pep Guardiola’s side’s season has been a big disappointment by their incredibly high standards, with the defence of their Premier League crown petering out relatively early in the campaign. Meanwhile, they were sent packing from the Champions League before the knockout stages.

There is still plenty to play for in the coming weeks, however, not least Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final showdown with Nottingham Forest at Wembley, and then ensuring they secure a top-five finish in the league.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have been one of the revelations of the season, sitting third in the Premier League table, so this will be a big test for City, who are looking to go one better than last term, when they were beaten by rivals Manchester United in the final.

Regardless of what happens this weekend, significant reinforcements are required at the Etihad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, and a hugely exciting player has now been linked with a move there.

Man City very interested in PSG star Desire Doue

According to a fresh update from journalist Rudy Galetti TEAMtalk, Manchester City are “very interested” signing Paris Saint-Germain teenager Desire Doue this summer. Scouts have been sent to watch the gifted 19-year-old attacker in action, while Guardiola is believed to be a big admirer. PSG will only listen to offers of at least £85m, though.

Doue is a player who could have a massive future in the game, with journalist Julien Laurens recently waxing lyrical over his long-term potential.

“The key was that Luis Enrique and sporting director Luis Campos were both convinced they were getting a superstar in the making. Doue is so talented, strong mentally and physically. At PSG, they say he’s got rugby players’ legs because the bottom half of his body is so strong. They knew in Paris it would take time but they were ready. Luis Enrique was so happy to sign him. He was the player he wanted.”

Doue already has 13 goals and 12 assists in just 45 appearances for PSG, highlighting his end product at such a young age, so the idea of him in a City shirt is mouthwatering for supporters.

Capable of excelling on either wing and also in an attacking midfield role, the Frenchman could provide Guardiola with the extra depth that he craves next season and beyond.

Sky Sports: Leicester eyeing 4-2-3-1 boss who is also wanted by Southampton

da dobrowin: Leicester City now want an “unbelievable” 4-2-3-1 manager, who is also wanted by Southampton, to replace Ruud van Nistelrooy, according to Sky Sports.

Leicester's relegation piles pressure on Van Nistelrooy

da dobrowin: The Foxes’ relegation to the Championship from the Premier League was confirmed on Sunday afternoon, in what has been a disastrous season for the club. They have just 18 points to their name after 33 games, winning just four games in total.

Related Leicester City eye move for new 40 y/o manager who has same agent as Vardy

He’s been in the Championship before.

The club chiefs hoped that Van Nistelrooy’s arrival would springboard the club into staying away from the drop zone, but just three wins in 17 games have not been enough to keep them in the Premier League.

That means the Foxes now have to prepare for life back in the Championship, and according to Sky Sports, Van Nistelrooy is expected to meet with Leicester’s hierarchy this week to discuss his future.

The Dutchman is expected to remain in charge for the remainder of the Premier League campaign, but there are doubts as to whether he will stay going into the summer, as both sides are unsure about continuing the relationship going into the Championship.

Leicester City managerRuudvanNistelrooy

Another concern for Leicester is that sacking van Nistelrooy before the end of June would cause problems for them meeting PSR obligations, as the Dutchman is under contract until 2027, and therefore, he would need to be paid off.

Leicester want a 4-2-3-1 boss who is also wanted by Southampton

So while the club chiefs weigh up what to do with van Nistelrooy, according to Sky Sports’ Rob Dorsett, Leicester are now interested in appointing Danny Rohl as their new manager after drawing up a managerial shortlist.

Dorsett reports that the Foxes have already drawn up a list of candidates to possibly replace Van Nistelrooy, and Rohl is one name that is under consideration. As well as Rohl, Leicester are also interested in former England interim manager Lee Carsley and ex-Southampton boss Russell Martin.

Rohl, who has been dubbed “unbelievable” by player Josh Windass, is a manager who continues to impress in the Championship with Sheffield Wednesday, as finances and ownership at the club are making his job difficult. However, the German has managed to guide the Owls to mid-table in the second tier, 10 points above the relegation zone and 10 points adrift of the top six.

The 35-year-old, whose preferred formation as manager is 4-2-3-1, will not be an easy man to get for the Foxes, as Southampton have made Rohl a top target in their search for a new boss.

Sheffield Wednesday is Rohl’s first job as a manager in England, but the work he’s done in guiding the club away from relegation last season and what he’s achieved in this campaign have now made him a highly rated coach in the second tier.

Their new Eriksen: Spurs want to sign £69m "box-crashing" Maddison upgrade

da pinup bet: When people think of Tottenham Hotspur’s modern greats, there are a few names that always pop up, and understandably so.

da bet sport: The first will almost certainly be Harry Kane, followed by Gareth Bale and then perhaps Son Heung-min or Luka Modrić, but one player who doesn’t get enough recognition from outside the fanbase is Christian Eriksen.

The Dane may be in the twilight of his career at Manchester United today, but for the six and a half years he spent in North London, he was one of the most exciting attacking midfielders in the Premier League.

So, fans should be excited about recent reports linking the club to one of the most exciting midfielders on the continent, who could not only be their new Eriksen but also a dream upgrade on the inconsistent James Maddison.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

With how poorly this season has gone for Spurs, the summer has to be a big one in terms of recruitment, and based on the last few weeks of reports, it certainly seems like it will, with Dean Huijsen being one of the latest stars touted for a move to N5.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The Bournemouth star supposedly has a release clause worth £50m in his contract, and while that seems like a lot of money for a teenager, he’s already a regular starter for an upwardly mobile Premier League side and now has two senior caps for the Spanish national team.

Further up the pitch, the North Londoners are also reportedly keen on signing Sunderland’s incredibly exciting Jobe Bellingham.

The younger brother of Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham would be available for around £20m, and considering he’s been compared to a young Dele Alli and has already amassed a tally of seven-goal involvements in 36 games this season, that could prove value for money in the long term.

However, Daniel Levy and Co will also be after a midfielder who’d be able to hit the ground running and make an instant impact next season, which helps explain their interest in Oihan Sancet.

According to recent reports from Spain, the Lilywhites are one of three Premier League sides keen on signing the Athletic Bilbao star, alongside Liverpool and Aston Villa.

Unfortunately, on top of having to contend with the competition, the North Londoners would have to stump up some serious cash to get their man, as he has a release clause in his current contract worth around €80m, which converts to about £69m.

It would be an incredibly costly and complicated transfer to get over the line, but as he could be a dream Maddison upgrade and Spurs’ first genuinely great attacking midfielder since Eriksen, it’s one worth fighting for.

Well, the first thing to say is that since the Dane left in January 2020, the North Londoners haven’t really replaced him, as even though the former Leicester City star has impressed here and there, he, nor has anyone else, been able to produce the consistent performances that the former Lilywhites star did.

This is where the Bilbao star could come in, as, since the start of the 22/23 campaign, he has scored 32 goals and provided 11 assists in 108 appearances, totalling just 7197 minutes, meaning he’s averaged a goal involvement every 2.51 games or every 167.37 minutes, primarily from attacking midfield.

Moreover, he also scored in the final of the Copa del Rey last season, a trophy the Basque side last won in the 1983/84 season, so it would be fair to say that he has the track record and CV to be viewed as a player capable of carrying on the mantle last held by Eriksen.

With that said, how does he stack up against the player he could replace in Ange Postecoglou’s midfield?

James Maddison for Tottenham

Well, when looking at their raw output from this season, it appears as if the Englishman comes out on top, as he’s managed to rack up a haul of 11 goals and nine assists to the Spaniard’s 16 goals and three assists, but when you take a look at how much they’ve played this season, the picture changes.

The Coventry-born star has made 42 appearances, totalling 2562 minutes, meaning he’s averaged a goal involvement every 2.1 games, or every 128.1 minutes, which is still impressive but pale in comparison to the Bilbao ace.

Ultimately, while Maddison is a useful player to have in the squad, he’s not been able to reach the heady height that Eriksen did in his pomp at Spurs, whereas Sancet is currently showing that he very much could.

So, Levy and Co should do all they can to sign the Spanish maestro this summer.

da mrbet: Back in 2018, then-Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho singled out midfield star, Nemanja Matic, for praise following the FA Cup quarter-final victory over Brighton and Hove Albion, with the Serbian giant described as an “island of personality and desire and control”, while “surrounded by a lack of personality, class and desire”.

Once there was the “Harry Kane team” – as Tottenham Hotspur were mockingly described by Pep Guardiola in 2017 – with United now in danger of becoming the ‘Bruno Fernandes team’, unless signings of a similar ilk can be found…

Latest on Man Utd's search for a forward

Having now failed to score in 12 Premier League games this season, the priority for Amorim and co this summer will surely be to bolster the misfiring forward line, with the 40-year-old perhaps keen to raid his former side, Sporting CP, to help revive his current ranks.

Manchester United manager RubenAmorimduring the press conference

The Portuguese coach has already missed out on Chelsea-bound teenager, Geovany Quenda, however, while there have been reports that it is ‘unlikely’ that a reunion with Sporting goal machine, Viktor Gyokeres, will take place this summer.

That is a view that has been echoed by a recent report from GIVEMESPORT, with the piece outling that the ‘most likely big-name’ to arrive from the Lisbon outfit is actually Francisco Trincao, rather than Gyokeres.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Indeed, the former Barcelona and Wolverhampton Wanderers winger is noted as a ‘leading’ alternative to current Molineux star, Matheus Cunha, amid Amorim’s search for a new forward, with the United boss having ‘pinpointed’ Trincao as a viable option.

The 25-year-old – who has a reported £67m release clause in his existing contract – is said to be ‘firmly in Amorim’s sights’ ahead of the start of the window, with the Portuguese ace having already proven himself to be a real weapon in his compatriot’s 3-4-3 set-up.

Sporting CP'sTrincaoin action with Arouca's Pedro Santos

Why Man Utd could be targeting the next Bruno Fernandes

It almost doesn’t need repeating what Fernandes has achieved in a United shirt thus far, with the experienced midfielder chalking up 95 goals and 83 assists in 279 games in all competitions to date, while winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup to boot.

Signed from Sporting for a fee of around £46m in January 2020, the playmaking genius had proven his quality during his stint with the Liga Portugal side, racking up 113 goals and assists in just 137 games across all fronts.

While operating in a more advanced role than his international colleague, Trincao – who has ten caps for his country – could well follow in Fernandes’ footsteps, having also dazzled in Lisbon in recent times.

The tricky left-footer boasts 61 goals and assists in 146 games for his current side, with that including a remarkable total of nine goals and 15 assists in 2024/25 thus far. Back at Old Trafford, only Fernandes has chalked up more goal involvements (33) this season.

It was actually Amorim who “launched Trincao’s professional career at Braga” in 2019, as per writer Zach Lowy, before reuniting with him at Sporting, with the in-demand forward having registered 56 goal involvements in 131 games under the current United boss in total.

While he did find life difficult in the Premier League previously at Wolves – after scoring and assisting just four times in 30 games for the Old Gold – he could well be deserving of another crack at it, not least under a familiar face like Amorim.

Once hailed as a “really exciting player” at Molineux by technical director Scott Sellars, Trincao evidently mirrors Fernandes in his creative prowess, having created 14 ‘big chances’ and averaged 2.2 key passes per game in the league this season. Fernandes, for reference, has created 12 ‘big chances’, albeit while averaging 2.5 key passes per game in England’s top flight.

With the Red Devils skipper having dropped into a deep-lying berth of late, his creative influence could then be replicated by the one-time Barca man in one of the two number ten roles, thus helping to try and spark some life into the club’s floundering forward line.

Having seen the magic that Fernandes can conjure up in English football, if Trincao could make a fraction of that impact, then United – and Amorim – will be on to a winner.

For example, when he started against Fulham before the international break, he was hooked at half-time and earned a 3/10 match rating from journalist Alasdair Gold, who described his display as ‘dreadful’ and ‘panicked’, which is not what you want from your central midfielders.

Another player signed in the same window who has to be sold or simply let go is Richarlison, who cost £60m, earns £90k-per-week and is never fit enough to play for the team.

In the almost three years since he moved to N17, the Brazilian international has made 80 appearances, in which he’s only been able to score 18 goals and provide nine assists.

Wage Burners

Unfortunately, there is yet another Conte signing who should be sold in the summer, someone who can be a serious liability at times.

The Spurs dud who must be sold

So, when it comes down to players who could be described as expensive mistakes, there are, unfortunately, quite a few at Spurs, but in this case, we are talking about Pedro Porro.

The Spanish full-back joined the club on loan with a £40m obligation to buy in January 2023, and to start with, there was a lot to like about him.

For example, in his first season and a half at the club, the former Sporting CP star racked up a brilliant haul of seven goals and ten assists in 54 appearances and looked like he could become the club’s own Trent Alexander Arnold thanks to his ability to whip a ball in.

Unfortunately, this season has seen his output drop to just two goals and seven assists in 42 appearances, and that has shone far more light on his defensive ability, or lack thereof, more accurately.

The Don Benito-born ace is a complete liability at the back, and we have seen that on multiple occasions.

For example, the time Leandro Trossard completely embarrassed him at the Emirates, his abysmal performance at home to Ipswich Town, which journalist Mitch Fretton described as a “horror show,” or his “absolutely terrible” showing at home to Bournemouth, as one podcaster put it.

What makes it all that much worse is the fact that he’s also making £85k-per-week, which means he’s amassed around £9.6m in wages so far, which means he’s cost the club about £49.6m in total.

That breaks down to about £516k-per-appearance, £5.5m-per-goal, £2.9m-per-assist or £1.9m-per-goal involvement, which is hardly value for money.

Ultimately, while Porro showed some initial promise at Spurs, he has since become a total liability in defence, and therefore, the club should look to sell him as soon as possible.

da betobet: Manchester City were largely ridiculed for their spending in the early days of their takeover, with Sheikh Mansour taking over the club in 2008 and investing heavily in the club, seeing a massive upturn in performance for the Citizens.

da realsbet: However, in the last five seasons, City’s net spend is £-308,749m, with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Newcastle and Tottenham all having a higher net spend in that time.

A lack of heavy investment over the years has allowed Pep Guardiola to keep a tight-knit group, only adding vital pieces to the puzzle and not disturbing the overall dynamics too much, but this has now caught up with them, with the squad now entering a period of heavy rebuilding.

Manchester City's big rebuild in 2025

Manchester City invested heavily in the January transfer market, looking to strengthen Guardiola’s side to ensure that even in their poor run of form, they had enough to challenge for Champions League qualification. The Citizens spent around £181m making five new signings.

Players such as Vitor Reis and Juma Bah were clearly signed with the future in mind, but the likes of Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez and Abdukodir Khusanov have all made instant impacts on Guardiola’s side, adding much-needed energy and athleticism.

The dynamics Marmoush has provided alongside Erling Haaland since his arrival has been a breath of fresh air, stretching the pitch with runs in beyond the big man, working hard to win second balls and not being afraid to get his shots off.

The 26-year-old has made ten appearances since joining the club, scoring four goals in 666 minutes played.

Both Khusanov and Gonzalez have been important too, adding extra defensive quality, especially in transition moments, for this City side, who have often looked dead on their feet this season.

Gonzalez has particularly caught the eye of Guardiola with the boss describing him as a “mini Rodri.”

But as good as all of these additions have been so far, City will want to continue their spending in the summer and in order to do so, they will need to part ways with some bigger names, allowing them to invest further in the squad.

How Man City can sell to buy this summer

It isn’t just about selling to generate funds to spend, but it is also to open up wage funds by offloading high earners who aren’t justifying their salaries.

The likes of Kevin De Bruyne on £400k-per-week and Jack Grealish on £300k-per-week are both players who could leave the club this summer, which would open up significant wage funds for City.

Bernardo Silva for Manchester City.

Another is cult hero Bernardo Silva. Currently taking home £300k-per-week, he could find himself replaced in the summer with fresh legs.

Now 30 years of age, the Portuguese is approaching the latter stages of his career and hasn’t exactly set the world alight this term across his 39 appearances scoring three goals and providing four assists.

In every single metric analysed below, Silva has fallen, only substantiating the fact that his performance levels are getting worse in a City shirt.

Sadly, he’s offering far less output, notably creating far fewer opportunities for his teammates to score from.

He’s also particularly less effective in build up in terms of progression and even dropping off slightly in his defensive work, notably ball recoveries.

Described as “world-class” by pundit Dion Dublin over his time at Manchester City, now could be the time for them to get his high wages off the books and reinvest in a younger core group of players, allowing Guardiola to kick-start this new Manchester City era.

Since joining the club back in 2017 from Monaco, Silva has earned over £50m in wages at Manchester City, with his current contract set to expire in June 2026. Perhaps it’s time for a change?

“We wanted an extra game in our schedule to give as many players as many match minutes as possible, in order to put them in the best position, physically,” said Frank.

“We will play two even, strong teams, and they will play between 60 and 75 minutes, maybe more. By the end of Saturday, 22 players will have played a lot of match minutes, and they will be in a very good place before we go on tour.”

As Tottenham gear up for two 90-minute contests in quick succession, chairman Daniel Levy and technical director Johan Lange maintain the club’s pursuit of new signings before deadline day on September 1.

Reliable media sources claim that Brentford striker Yoane Wissa remains a target for Spurs, and they’re in ongoing talks for the Congolese who scored 20 goals in all competitions under Frank last campaign.

However, Newcastle United are also in talks for Wissa, and they’re poised to submit a new bid in an attempt to win the race for Frank’s former star (Sky Sports).

While Frank faces stiff competition for the 28-year-old, as things stand, it looks as if Spurs are the only team competing for Nottingham Forest playmaker Morgan Gibbs-White.

Morgan Gibbs-White agrees "in principle" to join Tottenham

The 25-year-old was on the verge of a move to north London a fortnight ago, with Spurs even scheduling a medical for Gibbs-White on July 11 as they prepared to pay his £60 million release clause (BBC).

However, Forest then unceremoniously blocked the transfer – threatening both Tottenham and the player’s agent with a letter of legal action against them (Sky Sports). Nuno Espirito Santo’s side objected to how Spurs found out about Gibbs-White’s ‘confidential’ clause whilst accusing them of ‘tapping up’ the player too, and this tense stalemate remains ongoing with Levy hoping for a breakthrough (Fabrizio Romano).

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, sharing an update on the situation for TBR Football, Gibbs-White has agreed “in principle” to join Tottenham, and Forest appear resigned to eventually losing the England international.

This is because Evangelos Marinakis and his recruitment team are actively pursuing replacements, with talks ongoing over a deal for Man City’s James McAtee.

Manchester City'sJamesMcAteecelebrates after the match

Spurs are not giving up on signing Gibbs-White and the attacking midfielder remains their absolute priority. Forest were also hoping that City would come back in for Gibbs-White to spark a potential bidding war, but Pep Guardiola and co have “moved on” – giving Frank a clear run.

If the former Wolves star wishes to push through a move to N17, Sky Sports have claimed that Gibbs-White has the option of threatening Forest with legal action of his own for breach of contract.

Alternatively, Tottenham could offer to pay a larger fee to Forest in an attempt to loosen their stranglehold on Gibbs-White and finally seal the deal.
